Since we last wrote, neither group has been able to find a resolution with the McGill administration.

The Board of Directors has held two emergency meetings in order to discuss our options. Our President, Conference Chair and Vice-President and Local Arrangements Coordinator have also been in constant dialogue and connection with staff of the Federation, other academic associations and faculty members at McGill. We considered several options, ranging from staying at McGill to moving entirely online or canceling CCA24 entirely. After much deliberation, the Board concluded that the current circumstances at McGill University would not allow us to hold the kind of conference that our membership expects. At the same time, we also recognized that many of our members have already booked transportation and accommodation in Montreal and that some – especially graduate students – rely on CCA as a significant platform for scholarly and professional development. While differing opinions within our board were expressed, ultimately the majority of members opted for a solution that we hope will allow for an in-person CCA while avoiding the potential challenges posed by attendance at McGill. We have therefore booked rooms on the Université de Montréal campus, located about 40 minutes away from McGill University and readily accessible via public transit.

CCA24 will therefore take place in Montréal, June 18-21, 2024, in rooms booked on the Université de Montréal campus. While we will not be meeting on McGill grounds for our sessions, we are maintaining our participation in the 2024 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Canada. Our fee structure is not impacted by this change, and we ask that you register to both Congress and pay your CCA membership fees. Conference and membership fees are essential in order for our annual conference to take place, especially in a context of increasing costs linked to the change of venue.

As was already offered, if you prefer to deliver your conference presentation over Zoom, this option is feasible: please contact our Conference Chair, Faiza Hirji, and she will adjust the program accordingly. Finally, if you choose to withdraw from the conference at this point, you may do so here: https://www.openconf.org/cca2024/author/withdraw.php For those who choose to withdraw now due to the situation, the CCA will either reimburse the CCA membership fees or roll them over to next year, upon request. The Federation has informed us, however, that the Congress registration fees are non-refundable. We will update the official program in the next few days and provide greater details regarding rooms and buildings on the Université de Montréal campus.

We recognize that this shift is stressful and inconvenient for many of you. We acknowledge that many of you may be disappointed: you may have different opinions on the underlying issues or the best options to move forward. We hope that you can appreciate the complexity and exceptional nature of the situation and we hope that one way or another, you will participate in CCA2024.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the CCA President, Ghislain Thibault at ghislain.thibault@umontreal.ca or the CCA Vice-President and Conference Chair, Faiza Hirji at hirjif@mcmaster.ca
Sincerely,

The Board of Directors

Canadian Communication Association

30 mai 2024
